Agolo by Angélique Kidjo
“Agolo” by Angélique Kidjo is inspired by a Yoruba folklore about Olajumoke, a young woman who marries a mysterious, wealthy man against her parents' advice. Unbeknownst to her, the man is a spirit composed of a head with borrowed body parts. As they journey to his underworld home, he returns the parts, leaving Olajumoke horrified. The song captures her desperate cry for help as she realizes her fate, addressing her family about her irreversible journey with the spirit, symbolized by the head ('ori' in Yoruba).
